Rules of Holy Living

Adoniram Judson 178-1850

American Baptist missionary, lexicographer, and Bible translator to Burma. Born in Massachusetts in 1788. Helped form the American Baptist Missionary Union. In 1834 completed a translation of the whole Bible into the Burmese language. During the Anglo-Burmese War, he spent twenty-one months in prison. From 1845-1847, after thirty-four years in Burma, he took his only furlough to his native land. Returning to Burma, he spent his remaining years working on his English-Burmese dictionary. He died in 1850 and was buried at sea.

The rules of living which follow are copied from a paper in the handwriting of Dr. Judson. These rules illustrate the earnestness with which he strove after personal holiness, whilst engrossed with the labors of his missionary calling. He well knew that no external services could purify the heart; that his work could be done in no other way than by practically subjecting the whole soul to the commandments of Christ.

Rules of Holy Living

These rules were adopted on Sunday April 4, 1819, the era of commencing public ministrations among the Burmans; revised and readopted on Saturday, December 9, 1820, and on Wednesday, April 25, 1821,

1. Be diligent in secret prayer, every morning and evening.

2. Never spend a moment in idleness.

3. Restrain natural appetites within the bounds of temperance and purity. "Keep thyself pure."

4. Suppress every emotion of anger and ill will.

5. Undertake nothing from motives of ambiton, or love of fame.

6. Never do that which, at the moment, appears to be displeasing to God.

7. Seek opportunities of making some sacrifice for the good of others, especially of believers, provided the sacrifice is not inconsistent with some duty.

8. Endeavor to rejoice in every loss and suffering incurred for Christ's sake and the gospel's, remembering that though, like death, they are not to be willfully incurred, yet like death, they are great gain.

The Bells of Christmas

Typical (Baptist) church building - 1881
___________________________

Christmas Bells
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

Do you know the story behind the (poem) song? My sister who lives in Puerto Rico, sent this article to me in a Christmas letter. I had not read it before and found it interesting. I think you will as well.

"Christmas Bells" was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow close to the end of the Civil War. Not only had he faced the despair of the war, but his life at this time was one of despair. In 1861 the Civil War began and that same year his wife died in a fire in their library. Henry tried to smother the flames that were burning her dress by wrapping his arms around her. His face, arms and hands were severely burned and he was too ill from his burns and grief to attend her funeral.

The Christmas after her death he wrote: "I can make no record of these days. Better leave them wrapped in silence. Perhaps someday God will give me peace."

Almost a year later, Longfellow received word that his oldest son, Charles, had been severely wounded.

Listen to his sadness as he wrote, "And in despair I bowed my head. 'There is no peace on earth,' I said; 'For hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men!'"

But on Christmas day of 1864 he wrote the poem "Christmas Bells."

With all he had been through he wrote in the last verse, "Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: 'God is not dead nor doth he sleep. The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, with peace on earth, good will to men!"
- Copied

In all that we may be required to endure, let us never forget the last line that Longfellow wrote in his poem!

Mal 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he [is] like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

FMBC Christmas Program

First Missionary Baptist Church Healdton, Oklahoma
Christmas Program - Wednesday, December 21, 2011

These are a few pictures of a great church. This small congregation has a thriving ministry with children who were featured in the Christmas program. That is not the whole story. This church gave out fifty baskets of food to needy families in their neighborhood AND collected $750. outside the budget for the Lighthouse Children's home in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Way to Go!

Tea Party for Missionary Girls

One of the things that Mrs. Lewis enjoys is to provide a formal "Tea Party" for young girls. This last Tuesday she hosted five girls from two missionary families. The girls enjoyed it and it gave Mrs. Lewis the opportunity to share a Bible story with the girls.

Pastor and Mrs. Alton Byrd

In the evening service we dropped in at Liberty Baptist Church in Frisco, Texas. It was our first meeting with pastor and Mrs. Alton Byrd. They were very gracious and allowed us to tell about our ministry with GIBMissions. It was a joy to meet the enthusiastic members of this congregation and to ask for their prayers.

Pastor and Mrs. Harold Williams

On December 10th, my wife and I traveled to Pittsburg, Texas to be in the morning services at Bible Baptist Church where Harold Williams is the pastor. Brother and Mrs. Williams started the Calvary Baptist in Middletown, RI, back in the 70's when we were starting Blackstone Valley Baptist Church, in Woonsocket, RI. It was a joy to preach at their church and to rekindle the flames of our long friendship. Brother and Mrs. Williams have had a long and fruitful ministry for the Lord.

Thanksgiving at Children's Home in Costa Rica

My wife and I are spending some quality time with our long-time friends Larry and Paula Neff. We are staying in the apartment of Bob and Joy Martin while they have returned to the states to be with their family for a few days. Thanksgiving Day was a special event at the Lighthouse Children's Home here even though the country does not recognize this special day as most Americans do. The Neffs and their staff always take time to remember our heritage and use the occasion to be a special blessing to the local missionaries as well as the children in the home. The day was marked with sweet fellowship and a delicious meal of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, salad, corn, pumpkin pie, pecan pie and many other extras. The event was an occasion for some of the former residents of the home to come back for a "family gathering". In all, more than sixty persons were fed with the holiday provisions. After the meal, I brought a devotion about yielding to the Lord as He molds us and fashions us in His likeness. We are truly thankful that we have had this occasion to spend a few days at the Lighthouse. Many lives have been, and are being changed for the Lord at the Lighthouse Children's Home.

November 21, 2011 - From Costa Rica

My wife and I are staying with GIBM missionaries Bob and Joy Martin in Tres Rios (Three Rivers), Costa Rica. We have just completed the last module in this season's Bible institute which was conducted in The Bread of Life Baptist Church in Liberea, Costa Rica where Eulalio Cabrera is the pastor. I was honored to preach the at graduation The institute graduated two students this year. This is the second time that I was invited to come to participate in this institute, but it is the first time that my wife was able to accompany me to this beautiful country. There was a break in the weather and it was not as hot as we had expected for. PTL!

It is my opinion that training nationals to start and pastor churches is the proper long-term response to the great commission. We thank the Lord for the vision that that He has given to Bob and Joy Martin to train nationals in Central America to be the leaders that the Lord has called them to be. The institutes tend to be a kind of "boot camp" for men of God. It seems to me that this practical approach could work in almost any country.

On Sunday, November 20, I preached in the morning service at Bible Baptist Church, Roble (Ro-blay), Costa Rica. The pastor's name is Alexander. There were well over two hundred people in attendance. The people were friendly and the singing was very enthusiastic. The translator was experienced and the Lord blessed me with liberty to preach. The pastor requested tht I preach on "Missions" which I gladly did.

Baptist History

Last Sunday, June 12th, my wife and were invited by Pastor Chad Spence to spend the day with Landmark Baptist Church, Red Oak, Texas. Past Spence started a series on "Baptist History" in his Sunday School and asked me to speak on the subject this one Sunday. What a joy it was to rehearse the glorious history of the Baptist people! I also spoke on Sunday Morning and Sunday Evening in the services. We had a great day even though many of the regulars were away on vacation or at youth camp. Many of those in attendance came to the altar in response to the preaching of God's Word. Brother Spence and his church family made my wife and I feel special with their generosity and hospitality. It was a good day for us and for them.

Today I am in the Missions Office, catching up on communications and planning for Deputation School.

Dennis Fountain 2011-06-11

Brother Lewis -
Thanks for your visit to see me.  That is extremely thoughtful and encouraging.  I just received your e-mail today, because we only get online while at the hosp or at Starbucks...
I am receiving my 2nd treatment as I type this.  All has gone well; except for the fact that my white blood cell count is down to 1.1 and that is extremely low.  They told me to not go to church or be around any crowds, etc.  Well, I guess I need to get well quick don't I.  HA!
Keep in touch. Take care and be careful as you travel.

Visit with Dennis and Judy Fountain

Today, Sunday, June 5th, my wife and I visited the services at Wilson Creek Baptist Church in Battlefield, MO. Our purpose for being here was to check up on the condition of Dennis Fountain who has been going through treatments for cancer. We had a great time tin the services while Pastor Moody preached and were able to join him and the Fountains for a lunch prepared in the gumnasium of the church. Brother and Mrs. Fountain are having lots of visitors and phone calls. Today her father from Indiana came to be with them. They are surrounded with relatives and friends. The future is not clear as far as the cancer is concerned, but Brother and Mrs. Fountain will remain in MO until the chemo treaments are finished, which is suposed to be about six months. Cards and letters may be sent through Wilson Creek Baptist Church. They are not covered by health insurance.

Jane Kelly

Some of you will remember that I went to Baghdad twice. On the second trip, in 2004, while attempting to plant an independent Baptist Church, my friend and co worker, John Kelley was shot and killed. Many people have asked me about his family, and particularly his widow, over the years. We have be silent to allow them their privacy. I thought it to be a good time to share with you a little personal glimpse of Jane Kelley and her family. She is a peach and she works for CLA in Clearwater, FL.

Dear Judy,

I received you email and card. Thanks for remembering me and John. The Lord is good! Life marches on!

Since John went to heaven…
Jen graduated from High School and college. She is now preparing for the MCAT to get into medical school. She has met lots of young men, but Mr. Right hasn’t come along .
Truth is all the kids have graduated from something.

Julie finished law school and is licensed with the RI bar, the SC bar, and the NC bar. She received the “Compliat Award”, and John was mentioned at her graduation.

James got his master’s degree and his CPA license.

Jason joined the Navy and received the “Sailor of the Year Award” over his fleet of five ships. He finished electronic school and is trying to get into officers’ school.

The boys have both gotten married. We now have 3 grandchildren. Pray that all will give their lives to God.

I now live alone…Everyone was with me for Christmas. Oh, how I missed John but I find comfort in the sovereignty of God. Psalm 116:15

Give my love to your husband. You both are special.

Jane

Breakfast with Paula and Larry Neff

Today my wife and I drove to the Cracker Barrell in Desoto, Texas to have breakfast with old friends Larry and Paula Neff. The Neffs, who have started children's homes in five countries now live in Costa Rica. We have known each other since 1975. We have watched them help young people with storm tossed lives from all over the world. We plan to see them again in November when we visit with GIBMissionary, Bob Martin and participate in a graduation service at one of his institutes in Costa Rica.

On the Road in Nebraska. . .again

Yesterday (May 22) I preached twice and taught SS at Bible Baptist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Pastor and Mrs. Goodrick were very accomodating. They saw me at Doug Taylor's funeral and invited me to stay over and preach some missions messages on Sunday. The Lord blessed . . . the altars were full in both services. It was a great time for me to get better aquainted with the Goodricks and this great missionary church.

Doug Taylor laid to rest . . . .

Today Midlands Bible Baptist Church, Bellvue, Nebraska, Pastor Dave Lydick, The US Airforce and more than forty law enforcement officers joined Kelly Taylor and her children, Morgan, Micah, and Miranda at a memorial service for Doug Taylor. Ever since I have known Doug he was a special friend to me. He had an excellent spirit and a "can do " attitude. He was one of the finest men l have known. Midlands Bible Baptist has been blessed to have had such a man on the church staff. We praise the Lord that his suffering is over and his countenance has been changed like unto the image of his glorious Savior. He filled the role of "2nd man"  with an enthusiasm and optimism that has left an example for generations to come.

Home Again - Gone Again

We were in two churches in Red Oak Texas on Mother's day and arrived home Sunday night after church. In all we were out 68  days. I preached in 15 churches and conducted 7 missions conferences. We drove about 4,500 miles, more or less with no difficulties on the journey. We did have to drive several hours out of the way on the way home because Interstate 40 was flooded in Arkansas.

I am in a mote in Oklahoma city tonight. I just attended the services at HBBC Graduation preaching conference. The new chapel is absolutely perfect. It is beautiful! The preaching was terrific and I have connected with several friends. I am glad I came, even though I have only been home two nights since our last trip.

Thanks for your prayers!

Title: "HE LIVES!"

Reading: Matthew 28:1‑10
Text: vs.6 "He is not here for he is risen."

INTRO The great crowds that followed Jesus throughout His ministry are absent on this Sunday Morning. The horrors of the crucifixion had sent the disciples into hiding. Though Joseph & Nicodemus had begged the body of Jesus and laid Him in Joseph's own new tomb (Matt. 27:57‑60 John 19:38‑39), Even Jesus' closest followers have left Him now and He is alone in the tomb. How ironic this particular Sunday Morning is. The greatest moment of history is about to take place, and yet it is being done so quietly that no one realizes it. God often does His greatest deeds in quietness..in a corner of the room where the attention seems not to be focused..in the sinful life of a seemingly hopeless case.. in an unlikely church..an unlikely town in an unlikely way. That is what happened that Sunday Morning. In a quiet little corner of the the world God was working a miracle that would introduce hope into the darkest experiences that life can bring us. Since the resurrection of Jesus Christ, nothing that you or I face will ever be utterly hopeless..no battle will be too fierce.. no hardship will be too intense..no sorrow will be unbearable..no trial will be too difficult..no burden will be too heavy..no situation will ever again be hopeless! Christ is risen! There is always hope! It is this message that makes Christianity different from all of the other religions of the world. It all depends upon the resurrection.

I Cor. 15:07 "If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain.."but Halelujah! vs.20 "But now is Christ risen from the dead!" We can be victorious because Christ was victorious! The women in our text are about to learn this great truth!

‑ Herod was concerned:

Matthew 2:13  And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph  in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word:  for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

‑His MOTHER was concerned

Luke 2:49  And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? ‑His mother still doesn'take care of His father's business!

‑The PRIESTS were concerned:

Matthew 26:14  Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you?  And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

‑Today people give the priests silver to keep Jesus under control in their little   metal "tabernacle."
  Herod: His mother: the Priests

‑JUDAS was concerned:

Matthew 26:47  And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.48  Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he:  hold him fast. 49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.

‑The SOLDIERS were concerned:

Matthew 28:12  And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, 13  Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. 14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. 15  So they took the money, and did as they were taught:  and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

I.            A SURPRISING PROCLAMATION

      A. About where He is
     B. About WHO He is

The angel's first words were aimed at the whereabouts of Jesus. Perhaps this is because WHERE  Jesus is has so much to do with WHO JESUS IS.

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Jesus WHEREABOUTS had defined His very nature HeWAS GOD BECAUSE HE WAS WITH  GOD.

          1. SALV. CALLED FOR INCARNATION

John 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

        2.INCARNATION REQUIRED HUMANITY

Philippians 2:5 -9 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus
Colossians 1:14-18  In whom we have redemption through his blood . .

II. A STARTLING REVELATION -  vs. 6 ..HE IS RISEN..!"

          1. Startling because This is WONDERFUL!

Isa. 9:6 "His name shall be called WONDERFUL."
      ‑Earthquake
      ‑Angel at the tomb
      ‑Stone was rolled away
      ‑The brave keepers had fainted
‑The body of Jesus was gone

             2. Startling because it was IMPOSSIBLE

Luke 18:27  And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. 18 That by two immutable things, in Which it was impossible for God to lie, we
might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

‑NOW you can see men saved FROM EVERY STATUS OF    LIFE!
‑Now you can see men in God's service WHO WERE    NOT BORN INTO THE FAMILY OF LEVI!

            3. Startling because IT IS REASSURING

John 14:19  Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me:  because I live, ye shall live also.
‑God still hears & answers prayer.
‑God seeks & saves the lost.
‑God still heals & helps the afflicted.

III. A SATISFYING PROMISE -   vs. 6 "as He said.."

Matthew 12:40  For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

‑THE LOVE HE SHARES
‑THE FAITH HE BESTOWS
-THE PROMISES HE KEEPS AS HE SAID

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT HIS WHEREABOUTS?
ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT HIS IDENTITY?
ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT HIS ABILITY?

John 18:11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

- THE CUP OF POVERTY
- THE CUP OF BETRAYAL
- THE CUP OF PAIN
- THE CUP OF BEREAVEMENT
- THE CUP OF DEATH

Mark 10:38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

Where He is, Who He is and What He can do;
Have long been debated, before me and you.
In heaven, He's God and He saves from sin.
You can debate the subject or you can enter in.
His word is True, His work is done
He is unwilling to lose, no not one!
It's up to you, what will you do,
I know Where He is, who He is, and what he can do!
